Introduction

Smile design isn’t only about cosmetics—occlusion (bite), TMJ status, wear patterns, gum health, tooth positions and underlying bone must all be considered to create results that look excellent and endure.

Smile Design: The Foundation of Aesthetic Results

“Smile design” is the blueprint we use to envision and execute your ideal smile. Key steps include:

Smile Design - Consultation.jpg
Consultation & Discovery

We start by discussing your goals: Do you want whiter teeth? More uniform shape? Fix chipped or minorly misaligned teeth? Improve symmetry or proportions?

Smile Design - Photos.jpg
Intra-oral Photography and Digital Mock-ups

We take high-resolution intra-oral and extra-oral photographs (front view, side profile, full face with smile, close-ups of teeth) to document your current state and model the proposed changes. These photographs enable precise communication between you, the dentist and the laboratory technician.

Smile Design - Mockup.jpg
Digital smile preview (CAD-based)

Using photographs and digital simulation, we show you how your smile could look, allowing you to refine shape, length, colour, incisal edge profile and tooth display.

Smile Design - Occlusion.jpg
Functional & Biological Assessment

Smile design isn’t only about cosmetics—occlusion (bite), TMJ status, wear patterns, gum health, tooth positions and underlying bone must all be considered to create results that look excellent and endure.

Smile Design - Lab Communication.jpg
Lab Communication

With your approval of the mock-up, we send a detailed prescription to our dental laboratory with your photos, digital scan or impressions, shade guide information, desired incisal translucency/characterization, margin design, occlusal scheme and any accompanying specifications (e.g., minimal preparation veneers, layered porcelain finish, bespoke opacities). Effective lab communication is critical for achieving predictable, customized results.

Why High-Quality Photography & Lab Communication Matter

Lab Communication.jpg

In cosmetic dentistry, subtle differences matter. High-resolution intra-oral photographs serve several key roles:

  • They document your starting point and allow us to monitor progress.

  • They serve as a visual discussion tool for you to compare “before” and “after” options.

  • They provide the dental laboratory with accurate information about tooth texture, colour gradation, gum contour, neighbouring tooth characteristics and even lip dynamics.

  • They facilitate digital communication (cloud-based sharing) between the dentist and lab, enabling virtual “try-in” discussions and adjustments before fabrication begins.

In short: better communication = fewer surprises + higher patient satisfaction.

Veneers are best suited for aesthetic modifications – colour, shape, minor alignment, closing small gaps.

Veneers vs. Crowns - What's the Difference?

Veneers vs Crowns.jpg
Veneers

Thin shells of ceramic bonded to the front and sometimes the biting edge of a tooth, preserving more tooth structure. Best suited for aesthetic modifications – colour, shape, minor alignment, closing small gaps.

Veneers vs Crowns - Crown.jpg
Crowns

Full-coverage restorations that encase the entire tooth (or the prepared portion). Indicated when a tooth is heavily restored, fractured, endodontically treated or structurally compromised. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic enhancement when veneers alone are inadequate.

When we recommend a material, we consider: your aesthetic goals, functional demands (bite force, bruxism, opposing dentition), tooth location (front vs back), preparation allowed (conservative vs full), and budget.

Veneer & Crown Materials

When it comes to achieving a long-lasting, naturally beautiful result, the choice of restoration material and fabrication technique is critical. The following are material categories commonly used in aesthetic dentistry and how we apply them at AUSCA Dental.

Materials - emax.jpg
Lithium Disilicate (emax)

A high-strength glass-ceramic that offers excellent translucency and aesthetic character while maintaining sufficient strength for many anterior and select posterior restorations. Ideal for veneers and single-unit crowns when appearance is a priority and preparation can be minimally invasive.

Materials - Zirconia.jpg
Zirconia
(monolithic or layered)

Zirconia has exceptional strength, making it ideal for posterior crowns, longer spans, bruxism cases or patients with a heavy bite. Monolithic zirconia offers strength but less translucency; high-translucency zirconia and layered zirconia offer improved aesthetics while preserving strength.

DSC06021.jpg
Feldspathic Porcelain
(veneering/layering)

The traditional “pure porcelain” option valued for its ultra-natural luster and fine characterization (e.g., subtle cracks, opalescence, enamel-like edges). However, it requires more preparation and is less fracture-resistant than modern ceramics—so often reserved for veneers on low-stress anterior cases or as a layered aesthetic finish over a sub-structure.

When we recommend a material, we consider: your aesthetic goals, functional demands (bite force, bruxism, opposing dentition), tooth location (front vs back), preparation allowed (conservative vs full), and budget. We will always explain the pros & cons of each option and help you make an informed choice aligned with your smile vision and long-term care plan.

Your final restorations are crafted at a high-quality dental laboratory according to the prescription.

Cosmetic Treatment Process - What to Expect

Process - Consult.jpg
Initial Consultation

Review your goals, photographs of your smile, digital/photographic documentation and discuss possible treatment paths.

Process - Scan.jpg
Diagnostic Phase

Intra-oral scans or traditional impressions, photographic records, digital mock-up, lab prescription.

Process - Preps.jpg
Preparation visit

If proceeding with veneers or crowns, minimal removal of tooth structure occurs. Temporary restorations may be placed.

Process - Lab Fab.jpg
Lab Fabrication and Try-in

Your final restorations are crafted at a high-quality dental laboratory according to the prescription. On the try-in appointment, we assess fit, colour, shape and phonetics; minor adjustments may be made before final bonding or cementation. For some cases, multiple try-in appointments may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

Process - Final Placement.jpg
Final Placement

The new veneers or crowns are bonded or cemented, and occlusion (bite) is adjusted. We provide you with home-care instructions and schedule follow-up.

Maintenance

With excellent home hygiene, regular recall visits and protection (nightguard if bruxing), your restorations can serve you many years.
